If I Made An ArchiPodcast

Podcasts have been a part of my life for well over a decade now. Whether it’s for educational purposes or pure entertainment, I tune into dozens of programs as regularly as they choose to publish episodes. My favorite shows are often those run by regular folks talking about things they love. Interesting personalities and dynamics within friendships and professional relationships often keep me coming back even on topics that I don’t find too terribly interesting. In many ways, listening to podcasts is like being a fly on the wall.

Looking to the future, I believe podcasts are going to be critical for businesses and brands to both find new work opportunities and cultivate new relationships for sharing information and ideas with people all over the world. That isn’t an idea I’ve come up with, rather it’s one I hear preached often and agree with. So I’m starting a podcast in 2021!

I’ve had intentions of starting a podcast for years. Even bought and returned equipment before. The problem is that I’ve never known what to talk about. I’m not the best at rendering; there are plenty of podcasts from people who are experts at that and can provide more value than me. As far as architecture goes, which is what I spend most of my time doing… I’m good at my job, but I have relatively limited experience compared to the amazing architects I listen to as they harken back on decades of experience and achievement. Even the less accomplished architects I listen to who are absolutely going to be stars one day… I don’t know… maybe there’s some ‘imposter syndrome’ factoring in here, but they seem way more into the profession than me. And that is exactly what I want to talk about.

Going all the way back to architecture school and on into the workplace, my suspicion has always been that most of my peers like architecture more than me. When friends were minoring in business so they could be principals at big firms one day, I was minoring in fiction writing. I remember skipping a lecture to see Bjarke Ingels to go to a hockey game instead (I actually really regret that one since we lost). But stuff like that happened often and still happens to this day. It’s not that I don’t like (or even love) architecture; I really do. Obviously. This isn’t a profession you stay in if you don’t. But I like a lot of other things too; and I suspect all the people I’m categorizing as “Architecture is my life!” do as well.

Coming 2021.

So as I wrap up loose ends on other projects that I really need to finish before I give this podcast the attention it will no doubt need, require, and deserve, I want to get the ball rolling on ideas for format. I also want to start jotting down individuals who might be interested in joining me for a conversation in the future.

Target guests include:

  1. Folks within the profession who are on what might be considered a “standard” career path. Career ladder, promotions, and architecture are more-or-less life’s main focus… but obviously you are a more complex human than that. Let’s talk about it!

  2. Folks within the profession who have taken “alternate” career paths to ensure that more-than-enough space is left in their lives for hobbies and interests while still designing and building cool stuff. Probably more entrepreneurial types.

  3. Folks who used to be in the profession but left at some point to do something else…whether related or totally different.

  4. Folks who never entered the profession but possess an architecture degree. Really curious why things never materialized and how the education process informed the profession you did enter.

  5. Folks who are just interesting in general. Architects are famous for knowing a little about a lot and one of the best ways to do that is talking to others who have something worth saying.

Stay tuned and please contact me if you would like to collaborate.
